Celebrate World Spay Day with your local shelters!

Did you know February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month? This month ends on a high note with World Spay Day–putting the spotlight on how spaying and neutering can save pets’ lives!

Established by the U.S. Humane Society and the Humane Society International, World Spay Day emphasizes the importance of this effective animal birth control. Without it, global overpopulation would be much more rampant, leading to more animals being placed into shelters and…terribly…euthanized because the shelter either doesn’t have the resources to care for them, or because they aren’t adopted by a loving family in time. Many shelters and adoption agencies actually require it as part of the adoption process.

While we distribute our dog food on a national level, Variety Pet Foods is based in Colorado and enjoys being connected to and caring for the dog community here. If you live in Colorado, here are several great spaying/neutering resources and shelters that are working hard to make a difference:

1. Spay Colorado has a marvelous search program that allows you to find spay/neuter clinics right in your area.

2. The Foothills Animal Shelter in Denver is hosting a special Spay Day photo contest!

3. And the Denver Dumb Friends League offers donated spaying/neutering services for low-income households.

For those outside CO, the main Spay Day website can also connect you with clinics, as well as Spay Day events across the country.

Are your dogs spayed or neutered? Do you agree with this technique of population control? If you’re attending any Spay Day events, we’d love to hear how they turn out!
