We already know how many guide dogs serve their humans, keeping them safe as they cross the street, finding clear paths through crowded malls, or helping them get to school on time. These loyal companions dedicate their lives to steering their humans along, protecting them with both their keen minds and strong bodies.
But have you ever heard of guide dogs helping a couple meet and get married? Well, now you have! Claire Johnson and Mark Gaffey both attended a guide dog training class back in 2013. During those brief two weeks, their respective guide dogs, Venice and Rodd became inseparable–leading to the humans spending plenty of time together as well and eventually falling in love.
Gaffey had this to say about the training sessions: “During the training our two dogs, Rodd and Venice, seemed to know something we didn’t. They were always playing together and nuzzling up.”
Now, Johnson and Gaffey enjoyed a wonderful wedding ceremony just this past weekend in which Venice and Rodd acted as ring-bearers.
“I have no doubt that our guide dogs brought us together and helped me find my true love,” said Johnson. “Much like our two guide dogs, we really are best friends and soul mates. Our dogs were the class love story. Everyone used to joke about how Mark’s dog Rodd and my dog Venice were meant to be together.”
Gaffey added: “We could have easily missed one another by a week because it was a residential course and we just happened to be put on the same one. It’s ironic because we discovered that we only lived a mile-and-a-half away from each other but had never met. But we were purely in the right place at the right time. I have never believed in fate, but it does seem like it was meant to be…Now we joke that with every guide dog you get a free wife.”
