Rescue U is a college-based program established by the Petfinder Foundation which commits the time and energy of countless volunteers to help animal shelters in need across the country. Each year, volunteers help shelters rebuild and renovate to improve the quality of service they can provide for homeless pets.
This summer, Rescue U volunteers (all of them being college students) have willingly sacrificed their vacation time in order to visit numerous shelters across the country, working on everything from building outdoor pens to landscaping to repainting and more.
Here’s a great video detailing one of Rescue U’s efforts a couple months back, where they step in to work on a shelter in Luzerne County, PA:
Want to get involved in Rescue U or know some college students who would enjoy supporting their incredible mission? There are several ways you can:
- Students can open up local Rescue U Chapters and volunteer their time with nearby shelters
- Participate in Shelter Renovation Trips (note: these require active and ongoing volunteer time with Rescue U Chapters)
- Sign up a shelter to either be a Home Shelter or to receive Shelter Renovation
- Construct elevated dog beds for local shelters
- Make a donation!
Here’s a much more detailed list on ways volunteers can contribute their time to Rescue U and their partners. It’s always encouraging to see programs such as this making an enormous difference for animal shelters.
Have you ever been involved with a Rescue U renovation project? Or have you worked independently with a local shelter? Tell us about your experience!
